Comenius Partnerships enable pupils, students and staff from across Europe to work together on joint projects.

Partner schools from England (coordinator), Austria, Romania, Norway and Estonia intend to explore together the particular challenges faced by small schools.

Over three years the project will address management, administration, teaching methods, community relations, home-school links, provision for the wide spectrum of abilities, and means of assuring pupils a broad and relevant curriculum. The projection of a positive image for small schools to a wider community is an important secondary purpose. The partner schools have chosen a range of creative media to pursue these aims.

These include:

  • Visual presentations of our work via a common website and face-to-face seminars
  • Use of an E-Learning Network; an email forum that will facilitate problem-solving and offer professional support
  • A pen-pal scheme that will enable teachers to demonstrate work with mixed-age groups and motivate a wider group within the project (other teachers, parents and pupils)

The project meetings will provide host schools with the opportunity to celebrate the work of their school and the partner schools, to raise the profile of small schools amongst the wider community and to open staff and parents to tried and tested ideas that partner schools use to tackle common problems in their different contexts.
